In 2005 and 2006, our family journeyed through my father’s battle with lung cancer. Reading “Peaceful Passage, “by Kim West, PHD, I couldn’t help but think “wish this book would have been available during Dad’s illness.”
“Peaceful Passage,” is wrote by a woman who has personally walked through as well as professionally understands, all the emotions, decisions and actions someone goes through when a loved one is dying. This can be considered as an all in one guide for families journeying through a love one’s end of life experience. From the first page of this book, it is evident that Kim understands. She is knowledgeable but more importantly, she wants to use her experiences to help others understand and prepare them when faced with this heart wrenching journey.
Kim takes the reader through the many different steps and emotions of dealing with a long term illness. She starts with initially hearing the news and ends with what to expect during the final passage. It addresses what the caregiver faces with their marriage, children and career. Not only does she give practical advice for helping your loved one work through the myriad of emotions, she talks about the roller coaster of emotions the caregiver deals with as well. While this is wrote as a companion guide for families who partner with hospice. I believe any family facing the pending death of a loved one will benefit.
This book is thoroughly written and includes a work book as well a place to journal at the end of each chapter. I have added this book to my personal library and intend on purchasing additional copies to give to the Hospice chapter that our family partnered with during my father’s illness, for them to distribute to other families during those stressful, yet cherished days.
About the Author:
Kim West holds a PhD in Clinical Pastoral Counseling and a M.Div. in Counseling and Family, but when her own mother became ill with terminal cancer she found that she had no hands-on knowledge of how to take care of her.
As a counselor she knew to journal her own experience to help her process her grief at losing her mother and she knew how to help her mother finish her life well and be prepared for the life to come. But the day-to-day of taking care of her mother as she died would require learning a whole new set of caring skills. And learn she did.
After completing her own journey with her mother she knew she had to help others who would travel this same path. Peaceful Passage is a merging of her years of counseling experience and the new skills she learned caring for her mother combined with her heart to help and to heal.
