In 2006, my father lost his battle against lung cancer. For at least two years Dad fought against, as our family witnessed, the harmful effects of cigarette smoking. Watching the suffering my Dad experience the last few months of his life is something which grieves me yet today.
Doing a bit of research this afternoon, I found it wasn’t until 1966 that the government finally quit listening to the money talk from the Tobacco industry and issued warning labels on cigarettes. Then in 1970, President Nixon banned cigarette ads from TV and radio.
After questioning the medical profession and government in regards to tobacco, my mind switched to what I believe is the biggest deception we as a nation will ever face. Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton. Here we are forty years after these two landmark decisions by the Supreme Court and our government is still listening to the money talk from the abortion industry.
In the 1973 Roe v. Wade case, the Supreme Court ruled that a fetus is not a person but “potential life,” and thus does not have constitutional rights of its own. On the same day, in Doe v. Bolton, the Court ruled that a woman’s right to an abortion could not be limited by the state if abortion was sought for reasons of maternal health. The Court defined health as “all factors – physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age – relevant to the well-being of the patient.” This health exception expanded the right to an abortion for any reason throughout all three trimesters of pregnancy.
I have to wonder, how much longer will it take for the entire medical industry as well as our government to recognize the lifelong effects from abortion? How many more babies will be lost to these money mongers? How many more women, men and families will spend a lifetime grieving their choice? How many more…….?
If you or someone you love has made this “choice” and are living with the effects of it, please know there is hope and healing through Jesus Christ. Rachel’s Vineyard is a safe place to renew, rebuild and redeem hearts broken by abortion. Weekend retreats offer you a supportive, confidential and non-judgmental environment where women and men can express, release and reconcile painful post-abortive emotions to begin the process of restoration, renewal and healing.
Local Pregnancy Care Centers also offer post-abortion counseling and bible studies. If you are in the Lawrence, KS area, the fall 2013 SaveOne study will begin on Monday, October 28th at 6:00 pm.
