Today is the day! Some days I wonder how in the world I got here. How did the eighteen year old high school graduate, 20 year old bride and then a thirty year old mother of five become a mid-century old woman?
The minutes turned into days, days into weeks and weeks into years. My children grew up, the house became an empty nest and when I look in the mirror there’s a lady whose face has gained wrinkles and her body, well….let’s just not go there!
I determined a few years ago my birthday would forever be a day to honor my folks. Both of whom are sitting at the feet of Jesus. While I would love to be celebrating this mid-century with them, it would be selfish of me. Mom had struggled with a mental illness for years and Dad fought lung cancer for two and a half years. So, when God called them both home it truly was to live with no more pain or sorrow. How could I not want that for someone I cherish?
Today in remembering my folks, there are some treasured “gifts” I am forever grateful for:
- A Legacy of Faith
- Realization that sometimes in life we have to “Let Go and Let God!”
- The importance to be “real” even when life isn’t what the world determines it should be
- Unconditional love and acceptance for other Ragmuffins.
- Determination to forge ahead when life gets difficult
- Gentleness for others
- A life of humility
- Humor at the right time can diffuse any situation and help make life bearable
Mom and Dad,
I look forward to the day when together we will dance at the feet of Jesus! I miss you, love you and am eternally grateful for the “gifts” you gave me.
